Bollywood Actresses Over The Years

Despite the male dominated film industry, actresses found a space of their own in the industry with their fine talent. Beginning from Zubeida , the lead actress in Alam Ara (1931) - the first movie to be released with a sound track - many versatile actresses have given life to many characters and have made those roles evergreen. Nargis, Madhubala, Nutan, Waheeda Rehman, Meena Kumari and Mala Sinha could boast of the huge number of followers they made when they started acting in the Hindi film industry.

It was their success in the industry that inspired a lot of actresses foray into movies. Each decade in Bollywood saw charming beauties like Asha Parekh, Sharmila Tagore, Helen and Mumtaz showcasing their acting skill. With intense and breathtaking performances, Jaya Bhaduri, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi and Deepti Naval rewrote the definition of acting and were more popular than actors. Their ability gave them the opportunity to act in the lead roles of movies. Other talented actresses like Parveen Babi and Zeenat Aman were confident enough to portray sensuous characters, which broke the traditions of society. Hindi film industry started seeing actresses as an integral part of movies and storylines were incomplete without them.

In the 80s and 90s, Bollywood followers were mad about Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Karisma Kapoor Kajol and Raveena Tandon. Many well known song numbers featuring Bollywood actresses were a proof that they can not be ignored. Latest Bollywood Movie I Hate Luv Storys Review

Bollywood love stories are known to create magic at the box office and ‘I Hate Luv Storys' is no exception. I Hate Luv Storys by debutant director, Punit Malhotra stars Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor. The film is old wine in a new bottle as it does not have a very different storyline. The ideas and romantic sequences in the film are borrowed from earlier hit love stories. Just that the director's treatment of the age old theme, makes the film worth a watch!

I Hate Luv Storys is the story of Jay (Imran Khan) and Simran (Sonam Kapoor), two people as different as chalk and cheese. Simran is a die-hard romantic and loves love stories so much that her own life begins to resemble one. She lives in paradise with a doting boyfriend (Samir Dattani) and a good job as a production designer. Her world of dreams comes under threat as she comes across Jay, a cynic who believes in everything but love! Jay hates love stories. Things take a turn for the worse when he as an assistant director to Veer (Samir Soni), a film maker famous for making love stories, has to work under Simran.

Anyone watching the film can draw parallels between a Mills and Boon novel and the film. Punit Malhotra has done a commendable job as a writer. His characterization of Jay and Simran is also flawless.  But Punit could have done better as a writer as some of the other characters in the film seem deficient. Vishal-Shekhar have done an exemplary job with creating the musical tracks of the film. Salim-Sulaiman's background score is top notch. Ayananka Bose proves his brilliant skills as a cinematographer yet again with this film, after Kites. Styling by Manish Malhotra is chic and classic.

Imran Khan's performs his part with ease and has truly captured the spirit of Jay on the marquee. Sonam Kapoor takes you by complete surprise as she completely reveals a new aspect of herself as an actress. Her role as Simran is very different from what she played in her earlier films, Delhi 6 and Saanwariya. Her transformation from a plain Jane to a glam chic has gone down very well with the audiences. Imran and Sonam illustrate crackling on-screen chemistry. Samir Dattani is good. Samir Soni lives upto to his seniority as an actor and plays his part well. Kavin Dave as Imran's pal has done a great job. The others Pooja Ghai, Ketaki Dave, Anju Mahendru are fair enough. Overall ‘I Hate Luv Storys' is a youthful film with the lead pair adding a lot of freshness to the storyline and plot of the film. The youth are making a beeline for the film. And if you are romantic at heart, ‘I Hate Luv Storys' is definitely for you!

Born to veteran Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli on 10th of October 1954, Bhanurekha Ganesan alias Rekha is considered as the eternal diva of indian film industry. As her parents were not married she had to face many difficulties in her childhood. It was only when she was struggling to get a foothold in the film industry she exposed about her parenthood, they being famous in their era. Rekha appeared as a child actor in the Telugu film Rangula Ratnam (1966). Rekha made her debut as heroine in the successful Kannada film Goadalli CID 999 with Dr. Rajkumar in 1969.

She had two films released in 1970: the Telugu film Amma Kosam and the Hindi Sawan Bhadon. Sawan Bhadon was a hit and she becomes a star overnight. She got a lot of offers but nothing of substance. Her roles were mostly used to be just of a glamour girl, a typical Hindi movie heroine. She appeared in several successful films, such as Kahani Kismat Ki, Raampur Ka Lakshman, and Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye. Her first serious and performance oriented role came in 1976 when she signed Do Anjaane with Amitabh Bachchan. The most scandalous of these was Silsila, in which she played Amitabh's love interest and Amitabh's real-life wife, Jaya Bhaduri, played his wife. She also starred in the film Umrao Jaan. The film was considered one of her best performances and she received the National Film Award for Best Actress. In films such as Muqaddar Ka Sikandar and Umrao Jaan, her portrayal of courtesan with a heart of gold won acclaim and she played similar roles in other movies. Apart from the mainstream cinema she also enacted in various Art films like Basera, Ijjazat, Ghar, Aastha to name a few. Till date she delivers all her roles with the same sincerity as she used to do before. In the year 1982 she received the National Film Award for Umrao Jaan.

Other Filmfare Awards which she received were Filmfare Best Actress Award, for the film Khubsoorat (1980), Filmfare Best Actress Award, for the film Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for the film Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1997),Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2003.Bollywood Movie Award as the best Supporting Actress for the film Koi Mil Gaya(2004) Star Screen Award Best Villain, for the film Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Zee Cine Award for Lifetime Achievement(2006),Forever Diva Award (2007).She has the credit of acting in more than 180 movies. Be it acting or dancing she did each of them with same elan and finesse.

Get to see her Gallery: Bollywood

Throughout her life she has had lots of rumoured relationships with her co stars namely Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetandra,Vinod Mehra, Kiran Kumar to name a few. A gossip runs in Bollywood that she married actor Vinod Mehra in 1973 which she later denied in a recent television show. She married a businessman Mukesh Agarwal in 1990 who committed suicide in the year 1991.Her personal life was never a bed of roses. Presently she lives with her secretary, Farzana in Bandra Mumbai. Till date she is as graceful as she was during her early days. The secret behind her flawless beauty is her disciplined life, routine of yoga and meditation which she follows strictly. Each and every upcoming actress takes her as a role model and follows her style of makeover. She imbues every role she essayed with a dignity and characterization that makes it difficult to visualize anyone but her in those roles. In doing so, she has carved an indelible name for herself in the annals of Indian cinema.

Bollywood songs

Following India's independence, the period from the late 1940s to the 1960s is regarded by film historians as the "Golden Age" of Hindi cinema.[14][15][16] Some of the most critically acclaimed Hindi films of all time were produced during this period. Examples include the Guru Dutt films Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) and the Raj Kapoor films Awaara (1951) and Shree 420 (1955). These films expressed social themes mainly dealing with working-class urban life in India; Awaara presented the city as both a nightmare and a dream, while Pyaasa critiqued the unreality of city life.[17] Some of the most famous epic films of Hindi cinema were also produced at the time, including Mehboob Khan's Mother India (1957), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film,[18] and K. Asif's Mughal-e-Azam (1960).[19] Madhumati (1958), directed by Bimal Roy and written by Ritwik Ghatak, popularized the theme of reincarnation in Western popular culture.[20] Other acclaimed mainstream Hindi filmmakers at the time included Kamal Amrohi and Vijay Bhatt. Successful actors at the time included Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt, while successful actresses included Nargis, Vyjayanthimala, Meena Kumari, Nutan, Madhubala, Waheeda Rehman and Mala Sinha.[21]

While commercial Hindi cinema was thriving, the 1950s also saw the emergence of a new Parallel Cinema movement.[17] Though the movement was mainly led by Bengali cinema, it also began gaining prominence in Hindi cinema. Early examples of Hindi films in this movement include Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar (1946)[22] and Bimal Roy's Two Acres of Land (1953). Their critical acclaim, as well as the latter's commercial success, paved the way for Indian neorealism[23] and the Indian New Wave.[24] Some of the internationally-acclaimed Hindi filmmakers involved in the movement included Mani Kaul, Kumar Shahani, Ketan Mehta, Govind Nihalani, Shyam Benegal and Vijaya Mehta.[17]

Ever since the social realist film Neecha Nagar won the Grand Prize at the first Cannes Film Festival,[22] Hindi films were frequently in competition for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, with some of them winning major prizes at the festival.[25] Guru Dutt, while overlooked in his own lifetime, had belatedly generated international recognition much later in the 1980s.[25][26] Dutt is now regarded as one of the greatest Asian filmmakers of all time, alongside the more famous Indian Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray. The 2002 Sight & Sound critics' and directors' poll of greatest filmmakers ranked Dutt at #73 on the list.[27] Some of his films are now included among the greatest films of all time, with Pyaasa (1957) being featured in Time magazine's "All-TIME" 100 best movies list,[28] and with both Pyaasa and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) tied at #160 in the 2002 Sight & Sound critics' and directors' poll of all-time greatest films. Several other Hindi films from this era were also ranked in the Sight & Sound poll, including Raj Kapoor's Awaara (1951), Vijay Bhatt's Baiju Bawra (1952), Mehboob Khan's Mother India (1957) and K. Asif's Mughal-e-Azam (1960) all tied at #346 on the list.[29]
Modern cinema

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, romance movies and action films starred actors like Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and Shashi Kapoor and actresses like Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz and Asha Parekh. In the mid-1970s, romantic confections made way for gritty, violent films about gangsters (see Indian mafia) and bandits. Amitabh Bachchan, the star known for his "angry young man" roles, rode the crest of this trend with actors like Mithun Chakraborty and Anil Kapoor, which lasted into the early 1990s. Actresses from this era included Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan and Rekha.[21]

Some Hindi filmmakers such as Shyam Benegal continued to produce realistic Parallel Cinema throughout the 1970s,[30] alongside Mani Kaul, Kumar Shahani, Ketan Mehta, Govind Nihalani and Vijaya Mehta.[17] However, the 'art film' bent of the Film Finance Corporation came under criticism during a Committee on Public Undertakings investigation in 1976, which accused the body of not doing enough to encourage commercial cinema. The 1970s thus saw the rise of commercial cinema in the form of enduring films such as Sholay (1975), which solidified Amitabh Bachchan's position as a lead actor. The devotional classic Jai Santoshi Ma was also released in 1975.[31] Another important film from 1975 was Deewar, directed by Yash Chopra and written by Salim-Javed. A crime film pitting "a policeman against his brother, a gang leader based on real-life smuggler Haji Mastan", portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan, it was described as being "absolutely key to Indian cinema" by Danny Boyle.[32] The most internationally-acclaimed Hindi film of the 1980s was Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay! (1988), which won the Camera d'Or at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the pendulum swung back toward family-centric romantic musicals with the success of such films as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), making stars out of a new generation of actors (such as Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan) and actresses (such as Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla and Kajol).[21] In that point of time, action and comedy films were also successful, with actors like Govinda and actresses such as Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor appearing in popular comedy films, and stunt actor Akshay Kumar gaining popularity for performing dangerous stunts in action films.[33][34] Furthermore, this decade marked the entry of new performers in arthouse and independent films, some of which succeeded commercially, the most influential example being Satya (1998), directed by Ram Gopal Varma and written by Anurag Kashyap. The critical and commercial success of Satya led to the emergence of a distinct genre known as Mumbai noir,[35] urban films reflecting social problems in the city of Mumbai.[36] This led to a resurgence of Parallel Cinema by the end of the decade.[35] These films often featured actors like Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpai, Manisha Koirala, Tabu and Urmila Matondkar, whose performances were usually critically acclaimed.

The 2000s saw a growth in Bollywood's popularity in the world. This led the nation's filmmaking to new heights in terms of quality, cinematography and innovative story lines as well as technical advances in areas such as special effects, animation, and so on.[37] Some of the largest production houses, among them Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions were the producers of new modern films.[37] The opening up of the overseas market, more Bollywood releases abroad and the explosion of multiplexes in big cities, led to wider box office successes in India and abroad, including Lagaan (2001), Devdas (2002), Koi... Mil Gaya (2003), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Veer-Zaara (2004), Rang De Basanti (2006), Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006), Krrish (2006), Dhoom 2 (2006), Om Shanti Om (2007), Chak De India (2007), Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), My Name is Khan (2010), and Dabangg (2010) delivering a new generation of popular actors (Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan) and actresses (Aishwarya Rai, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra[38][39]), and keeping the popularity of actors of the previous decade. Among the mainstream films, Lagaan won the Audience Award at the Locarno International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards, while Devdas and Rang De Basanti were both nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The Hindi film industry has preferred films that appeal to all segments of the audience (see the discussion in Ganti, 2004, cited in references), and has resisted making films that target narrow audiences. It was believed that aiming for a broad spectrum would maximise box office receipts. However, filmmakers may be moving towards accepting some box-office segmentation, between films that appeal to rural Indians, and films that appeal to urban and overseas audiences.
Influences for Bollywood

Gokulsing and Dissanayake identify six major influences that have shaped the conventions of Indian popular cinema:[40]

    * The ancient Indian epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana which have exerted a profound influence on the thought and imagination of Indian popular cinema, particularly in its narratives. Examples of this influence include the techniques of a side story, back-story and story within a story. Indian popular films often have plots which branch off into sub-plots; such narrative dispersals can clearly be seen in the 1993 films Khalnayak and Gardish.[40]
    * Ancient Sanskrit drama, with its highly stylized nature and emphasis on spectacle, where music, dance and gesture combined "to create a vibrant artistic unit with dance and mime being central to the dramatic experience." Sanskrit dramas were known as natya, derived from the root word nrit (dance), characterizing them as specacular dance-dramas which has continued Indian cinema.[40] The theory of rasa dating back to ancient Sanskrit drama is believed to be one of the most fundamental features that differentiate Indian cinema, particularly Hindi cinema, from that of the Western world.[41]
    * The traditional folk theatre of India, which became popular from around the 10th century with the decline of Sanskrit theatre. These regional traditions include the Yatra of Bengal, the Ramlila of Uttar Pradesh, and the Terukkuttu of Tamil Nadu.[40]
    * The Parsi theatre, which "blended realism and fantasy, music and dance, narrative and spectacle, earthy dialogue and ingenuity of stage presentation, integrating them into a dramatic discourse of melodrama. The Parsi plays contained crude humour, melodious songs and music, sensationalism and dazzling stagecraft."[40]
    * Hollywood, where musicals were popular from the 1920s to the 1950s, though Indian filmmakers departed from their Hollywood counterparts in several ways. "For example, the Hollywood musicals had as their plot the world of entertainment itself. Indian filmmakers, while enhancing the elements of fantasy so pervasive in Indian popular films, used song and music as a natural mode of articulation in a given situation in their films. There is a strong Indian tradition of narrating mythology, history, fairy stories and so on through song and dance." In addition, "whereas Hollywood filmmakers strove to conceal the constructed nature of their work so that the realistic narrative was wholly dominant, Indian filmmakers made no attempt to conceal the fact that what was shown on the screen was a creation, an illusion, a fiction. However, they demonstrated how this creation intersected with people's day to day lives in complex and interesting ways."[40]
    * Western musical television, particularly MTV, which has had an increasing influence since the 1990s, as can be seen in the pace, camera angles, dance sequences and music of 2000s Indian films. An early example of this approach was in Mani Ratnam's Bombay (1995).[40]

Influence of Bollywood

In the 2000s, Bollywood began influencing musical films in the Western world, and played a particularly instrumental role in the revival of the American musical film genre. Baz Luhrmann stated that his musical film Moulin Rouge! (2001) was directly inspired by Bollywood musicals.[42] The film incorporated an Indian-themed play based on the ancient Sanskrit drama The Little Clay Cart and a Bollywood-style dance sequence with a song from the film China Gate. The critical and financial success of Moulin Rouge! renewed interest in the then-moribund Western musical genre, and subsequently films such as Chicago, The Producers, Rent, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Sweeney Todd, Across the Universe, The Phantom of the Opera, Enchanted and Mamma Mia! were produced, fueling a renaissance of the genre.[43][44]

A. R. Rahman, an Indian film composer, wrote the music for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bombay Dreams, and a musical version of Hum Aapke Hain Koun has played in London's West End. The Bollywood musical Lagaan (2001) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and two other Bollywood films Devdas (2002) and Rang De Basanti (2006) were nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire (2008), which has won four Golden Globes and eight Academy Awards, was also directly inspired by Bollywood films,[32][45] and is considered to be a "homage to Hindi commercial cinema".[22] The theme of reincarnation was also popularized in Western popular culture through Bollywood films, with Madhumati (1958) inspiring the Hollywood film The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975),[20] which in turn inspired the Bollywood film Karz (1980), which in turn influenced another Hollywood film Chances Are (1989).[46] The 1975 film Chhoti Si Baat is believed to have inspired Hitch (2005), which in turn inspired the Bollywood film Partner (2007).[47]

The influence of Bollywood filmi music can also be seen in popular music elsewhere in the world. In 1978, technopop pioneers Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto of the Yellow Magic Orchestra produced an first electronic album Cochin Moon based on an experimental fusion between electronic music and Bollywood-inspired Indian music.[48] Devo's 1988 hit song "Disco Dancer" was inspired by the song "I am a Disco Dancer" from the Bollywood film Disco Dancer (1982).[49] The 2002 song "Addictive", sung by Truth Hurts and produced by DJ Quik and Dr. Dre, was lifted from Lata Mangeshkar's "Thoda Resham Lagta Hai" from Jyoti (1981).[50] The Black Eyed Peas' Grammy Award winning 2005 song "Don't Phunk with My Heart" was inspired by two 1970s Bollywood songs: "Ye Mera Dil Yaar Ka Diwana" from Don (1978) and "Ae Nujawan Hai Sub" from Apradh (1972).[51] Both songs were originally composed by Kalyanji Anandji, sung by Asha Bhosle, and featured the dancer Helen.[52] Also in 2005, the Kronos Quartet re-recorded several R. D. Burman compositions, with Asha Bhosle as the singer, into an album You've stolen my heart - Songs From R D Burman's Bollywood, which was nominated for "Best Contemporary World Music Album" at the 2006 Grammy Awards. Filmi music composed by A. R. Rahman (who would later win two Academy Awards for the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack) has frequently been sampled by musicians elsewhere in the world, including the Singaporean artist Kelly Poon, the Uzbek artist Iroda Dilroz, the French rap group La Caution, the American artist Ciara, and the German band Löwenherz,[53] among others. Many Asian Underground artists, particularly those among the overseas Indian diaspora, have also been inspired by Bollywood music.

So, when the bollywood event photos get their share in the internet or magazines, then the bollywood actress photo also is included in it. Various film critics, review writers, movie buffs are sending in, their new movie release reviews, reviews of DVD and Bluray releases, and such.

There are discussion forums, comment section, and many other things in the internet where people can discuss, listen, put their views and argue about matters related to Indian cinema, and this goes on towards being considered as the Indian boxoffice report. From such reports, one can also know about the success at different stages of release of the movies. It is through such a report that people could know the top collections of opening day, of a week or of a month. And this goes on further to classify the success of movies and given them rankings.

Box office is a place where the fate of most of the movies in the commercial category is decided. It is basically through the internet nowadays, that most of the movies are being projected. This particular projection is being done by various means, of which the bollywood actress photo from launch parties, from meetings, from movie stills, and many other places are being put forth as an attractive feature. Other actors are also given their credits according to their popularity.

But in recent years, the bollywood event photos are being considered as important means of popularising the stars and their films. Many a times, these are being considered as means of promoting the movies that are to be released in the near future. And there is perhaps nothing wrong in doing so as the overall aim of every filmmaker and people involved, is to bring better Indian boxoffice report.

Property Prices in Mumbai

Mumbai, the dream-city of millions of Indians, has shown a gigantic proportion in real estate market over the last thirty years. Liberalization in the economic policies along with augmentation in business opportunities has opened the doors for the growth of real estate in India. Mumbai, being the hub of business as well as the Indian economic system, has become the favorite hunting ground for realtors in almost every aspect of commercial, industrial, retail, hospitality, healthcare, and most importantly residential sectors.

The dense population of Mumbai has given a reason to the multinational companies to set up their base in the heart of this city. The establishment of these companies has also given a boost to the real estate sector. With more and more people vying for accommodation in Mumbai and its neighboring areas, the prices of flats for sale or rent have reached skyrocketing prices.

Highly developed infrastructure of the magical city of Mumbai is chiefly responsible for attracting vast number of IT, ITES, BPO, and KPO segments. Besides, the hip and classy lifestyle of the city makes it the most desirable destination of millions. In fact, possessing a house or apartment in Mumbai is considered a matter of pride amongst many sections of society. Research suggests that the demand for apartments is more than that of bungalows or houses in the city. The noted realty players in Mumbai are chiefly the private ones, who offer professional services to ensure a stylish and classy living.

No wonder accommodation charges in Mumbai are exorbitantly high. A close analysis also suggests that the rental value in Mumbai is much higher compared to other metros. Besides, being the 'fashion capital of India', it is also the first city to be hit by the retail storm. The inauguration of the retail market has paved the way for mall space, retail stores and showrooms. No wonder, the retail property in Mumbai has also peaked up.

Being the hub of renowned business centers, the home of Bollywood stars, the arena of luxurious lifestyle, Mumbai supports high cost of living. Real estate builders are cashing on the incessant demand for housing and rental facilities in this city. Of late, there have been few talks about making available some affordable housing facilities. The buzz is that the Government is co-coordinating with real estate builders to introduce some sets of apartments on comparatively cheaper rates. If this is to be believed, it would indeed be a great relief for millions. For those who cannot afford to buy an individual housing property, flats for rent in Mumbai are the only option. If the cheaper version of flats is actually introduced, then renting these apartments would not take a toll on one's pocket. Hopefully, Mumbai would offer more and more people a little space in its heart.

Wain Roy is an internet marketing professional expert in various industries like real estate, web design, finance, medical tourism, pharmacy drug and flats for rent in Mumbai

Hollywood's Fling With the Mob

Hollywood is home to some of the biggest movie production companies, directors, actors and actresses. Today Hollywood is the word used for the glamorous multibillion dollar US film industry. It is also home to some of the world biggest names in the entertainment industry and a place that most up and comers aspire to be on day. How could Hollywood ever be linked with the Mob? On the surface Hollywood would seem to be worlds apart from the murderers, extortionist, and gangsters in the Mob. But on closer inspection you can see that the film industry and the mob are very similar indeed.

Many of the Hollywood stars and moguls often originated from the same place as the gangsters, in that they were immigrants from Europe or sons of immigrants. For instance, the Warner brothers were sons of a Polish cobbler while the Cohn brothers were sons of a German tailor. And Frank Sinatra's grandfather lived in the same village as Lucky Luciano.

With the film industry being so successful in Hollywood, of course the mafia would be attracted to it and the huge potential for financial gain. The need for huge amounts of cash to create a movie meant that this was perfect for laundering money unlike other forms of "fronting" such as a manufacturing business which take a bit of time to set up before they can start washing money. So the mafia would be naturally attracted to such an opportunity. It would be simple enough for the mafia to move into the film industry.

Bankers were always reluctant to lend the huge sums required to make a film because they saw the film industry a volatile and unable to produce a consistent return on investment, but the gangsters who already controlled the film industry unions were prepared to take a greater risk for bigger reward. Control of the unions gave the mob greater leverage over the film industry. Although the big movie producers were all too happy to jump into bed with the mob because it afforded them more financial freedom.

Film historian David Thomson once said that the Hollywood mogul's in the Golden Age (1920s to late 1950s) often behaved like gangsters, which was probably largely down to their very close relationship with the mob. MGM boss Louis B. Mayer was good friends with gangster -turned-agent Frank Orsatti, while Chicago mobster Johnny Rosselli was so close to Columbia studios boss Harry Cohn that they wore identical rings.

Writer Raymond Chandler who also wrote many screen plays for Hollywood producers once wrote to a friend after noticing the similarities between the Hollywood executives and the Mafiosi. He wrote:

"Once looking out of Joe Sistrom's window on the (Universal) lot, I happened to see the big boys strolling back from lunch in the exec dining room in a loose group. I was transfixed with a sinister delight. They looked exactly like a bunch of topflight Chicago gangsters moving in to read the death sentence on a beaten competitor. It brought home to me in a flash the strange psychological and spiritual kinship between the operations of big money business and the rackets. Same faces, same expressions, same manners. Same way of dressing and same exaggerated leisure of movement."

The mafia has intimidated actors and producers with threats and violence since the 1930s, extorting the studios for up to $1.5 million a year, which would be the equivalent of $14 million in today's times. The mafia is reportedly still at it these days although there are now huge barriers to get over to gain entry into the movie business. Most of their business can only be done at lower levels now and on a smaller scale. It was reported that as recently as 7 years ago members of the Gambino crime family were imprisoned for threatening and trying to extort the actor Steve Seagal.

I am sure that the relationship between Hollywood and the Mob was/is not just for financial reason. The moguls of Hollywood loved to rub shoulders with the high flying gangsters because it added that certain power that they craved, and for the gangsters, having a friend or friends who was successful in the movie business would bring a lot of prestige and street cred.

How to Become an Actor or Actress - Using Mentors to Guide You as an Acting Newbie

If you're one of the many individuals who has considered the life of a thespian, you know that it is a particularly tough field to get in to. You hit a catch 22 of sorts when trying to get started in show biz. You need the good jobs to get to know the right people. But you also need to know the right people to get the good roles. Getting a seasoned mentor gives you an edge that few actors or actresses have.

Inexpensive Tuition

Why pay tuition for a full 4 year program which doesn't necessarily give you the experience a seasoned professional can offer? Good mentoring sites out there will get you real life, hands on training you simply won't get in a classroom. Additionally, these programs range from $7,000 to $9,000. Compare that to what you can expect to pay in a full four year program.

Your Education Comes to You

When you enroll in a college acting degree, you have no say as to where you want to be geographically. When you get a mentor, however, you can get training from a seasoned pro near where you live. Most programs will help you locate a mentor in your local area, so you don't need to be in LA or New York to get your feet wet.

Get Connected

When you work with a seasoned mentor, you not only get the benefit of their experience in acting, but you inherit their network. It's been said many times over that in show biz, it's all about who you know and not what you know. Your mentor can help you establish connections with people you probably never would have been able to work with.

So while a full degree has its credit and its place in the acting industry, you'll be surprised with just how far a veteran can take you as you apprentice your way to fame.

Bollywood Stars Rumors and Facts

The world is a global marketplace and where once India was faced with watching Hollywood reruns, Bollywood is now one of the largest most powerful motion picture production facilities in the world.

Statistics: 1000 Hindi-language films are produced every year. Ticket sales exceed 3.6 billion.

Hollywood has its stars, so too does Bollywood and while the world's tabloids may focus on Britney Spears, Yana Gupta and Abhay Deol are not far behind with a relationship that was secret, but now has been made public.

Randeep Hooda and Sushmita Sen are rumored to be having secret meetings on horseback, but the rumors were denied... "Where do you hear all this? Its complete rubbish," laughs Sushmita. Aishwarya Rai has no intentions of quitting movies simply because she is married; and is paired with Gerard Depardieu in the film Asterix at the Olympic Games.

Another of Bollywood's babes Monalisa (real name Antara Biswas) continues to draw attention and gasps from men (and some women) across India as she posses in revealing photographs and videos. Talking of photoshoots Gauri Khan graces the cover of US magazine "Vogue" and tells all in an expo'se.

Deepika Padukone a beautiful Bollywood heartbreaker, makes movies (latest Om Shanti Om) and works toward a Bachelors degree at Indira Gandhi National Open University. Heartbreakers John Abraham and Bipasha Basu have exchanged rings and will be married soon. Bollywood may never be the same with these eligible Bollywood stars getting hitched.

Bollywood stars don't let the fame get in the way of their faith though. Amitabh Bachchan has not forgotten his faith recently travelling to the Golden Temple and the Durgiana temple to offer prayers for the actor's mother actor's mother Teji Bachchan.

Sonali Kulkarni, breaks her silence and tells the world about her transparent dress, claiming she wears it all the time and it was merely a trick of the light. As for this reporter, I plan to travel with a flash light from now on.

Bollywood news, much like Hollywood loves to have a glimpse into the minds, hearts and lives of their stars. It is sometimes amazing that a movie star is simply a person; living life just like the rest of us.

Chhote Nawab has committed his heart to Kareena Kapoor. While there is rumor of trouble, Chhote says, "A lot of people say a lot of things. She's the most wonderful person I know".

Bollywood is not above capitalizing on the fact their actors and actresses often undertake new, challenging and often controversial roles. Mallika Sherawat is being considered by director Kundan Shah's for the role of a prostitute-turned-politician in his new film. Rakesh Roshan has deprived Deepika Padukone of fame and fortune and the Bollywood "A list", turning her down for consideration in the new film staring Hrithik Roshan.

Bollywood may play second to Hollywood, but those times may soon change if writer's strikes and inflated production continue to drive producers away from the golden shores of LA. Bollywood is here to stay and Britney Spears may soon be calling. Bollywood has its own internationally known stars such as the actress Shilpa Shetty who has recently appeared in the controversial United Kingdom's Big Brother television program.

Fact or Fiction: Bollywood is a real city in India? Bollywood is not an actual place; it was created in the minds of the press. (Bombay and Hollywood) And while there are many critics, stating this makes us appear as second cousins to Hollywood; it is a name that seems destined to remain.
